Literature Text

You said you owned me
Your feelings were hurt
You sobbed in pain while
I lay in the dirt

I have broken your heart
And you just want me back
You say you’ll forgive me
But I’m not in the black

You have come to see what I am living for
You say you’re concerned, but really, I’m fine
I am out of the past, the days of yore
I have found myself, and I’ve drawn a line

My life had a purpose;
To worship and serve you
I always thought that’s what
Normal people would do

You made me so blind
I never could fight
You were surprised when
Life showed me the light

You have come to tell me that this will mean war
You say you’re concerned that I’m out of line
I’m out of the Dark Ages, the days of Your
I have found myself in this world of Mine
This poem is based on a little piece of wordplay, where the word 'yore' is replaced by 'your'. The story is about abusive manipulation, and the implication is that the abuser is in the speaker's past, having no further sway over her life. The title is a reference to the popular Grammar Guy meme.
